Tekau Ma Rua Recipient - Phoenix Ngarimu

Well done to Phoenix for becoming the first recipient of our Tekau ma rua roopu. This is a new initiative that we are piloting. The initiative involves enhancing the current leadership potential within our students and offering them a chance to take ownership on how things can be exercised better for our students. The Tekau ma rua roopu will be the main student voice of our syndicate. You have to show outstanding work ethic, morals and values to be selected for this roopu. Every student should strive to be part of the Tekau ma rua. Phoenix has earned this right. She is a model student who epitomizes excellence and the core values we have at Gisborne Intermediate. Nga Mihi Phoenix. A true Mana Wahine you are.

Turanganui Taonga Boys Sleepover

Thank you to all of our awesome boys and role models for staying at school on Friday night. Our three matua reported that they had a fantastic evening and loved reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting a lot of new faces as well. The boys and their significant role models enjoyed a fun filled evening together. We will be having a similar evening for our girls in the future so watch this space and we also have some whanau challenges in the pipeline that link in to our classroom programmes too.

Tuakana / Teina Roles

As part of our whanau kaupapa this year, we are providing opportunities for our students to become Tuakana (Leader, Guide, Big Brother, Big Sister). These roles allow students to develop leadership roles and responsibilities. Tuakana roles can happen right across the curriculum whether it be in Math, Reading, Writing and so on. We have seen a number of students step into these roles.

Week 3 History Lesson

This week our students embarked on a historical hikoi in and around the City harbour and beaches. Museum Curators Matua Aaron and Koka Julie shared their Matauranga around the history between  between Tangata Whenua and European settlers. Students learnt the basic Whakapapa of Waikanae, Heipipi Park and more. We believe it is important for our Tamariki to learn about their backyard as this also gives them a stronger sense of belonging.

Collaborative Learning - Wananga

Students were involved in some collaborative learning today. The topic was "Wananga". Students were split into groups and given a set of Questions based on Wananga and Collaborative learning. The main objective is that students feel comfortable and are able to contribute without being criticized. Students understand that it is ok to make mistakes, because we can create a supportive learning environment for them. A topic will be introduced most weeks and students can give their honest opinions about that topic, knowing that we live in a world of diversity. Some awesome feedback today.
